Foundry: Introduction to the Matrix Structure and Casting Performance of Compacted Graphite Iron

Foundry

Foundry: Compacted graphite iron is a type of gray cast iron with a transitional form between flake and spheroidal graphite. It is an engineering structural material characterized by good mechanical and thermal conductivity properties, as well as low cross-section sensitivity.

Foundry: Compacted graphite iron It is a gray cast iron with a transition morphology between flake and spheroidal graphite. It is an engineering structural material characterized by good mechanical and thermal conductivity and low cross-sectional sensitivity. It appeared in the 1960s. China is one of the first countries to study cast iron. In 1966, Shandong Institute of Mechanical Design published a paper on rare earth high-strength gray cast iron, marking the successful development of compacted graphite iron production technology in China.

Matrix structure

Foundry: The compacted graphite iron matrix structure is characterized by a high ferrite content (40% to 50% or higher), but pearlite stabilizing elements (such as copper, tin, antimony, etc.) can also be added to obtain a as-cast pearlite matrix with a content of about 70%, or a normalizing treatment method can be used to obtain a pearlite matrix.

Foundry : Casting performance

       (1) Compacted iron has a high carbon equivalent, and the addition of rare earth alloys purifies the molten iron, giving it good fluidity. With the same carbon equivalent, compacted iron and gray cast iron have similar fluidity.
       (2) The shrinkage of compacted iron is also between that of gray cast iron and ductile iron. The gating system can be designed according to gray cast iron. However, for complex castings with high density requirements and large differences in wall thickness, the gating and feeding system of ductile iron should be used.
       (3) Compacted iron has the excellent properties of both gray cast iron and ductile iron. Its tensile strength and yield strength are higher than those of gray cast iron, which is equivalent to ferritic ductile iron. The thermal conductivity is close to that of gray cast iron, so the casting process is convenient, simple, and the yield rate is high.
       (4) Compacted graphite iron has good resistance to growth and oxidation. The wear resistance of compacted iron is more than 2.2 times that of Chinese standard HT300, 1 times higher than that of high-phosphorus cast iron, and similar to that of phosphorus-copper-titanium cast iron.
