Casting: Introduction to the Main Properties of Ductile Iron

Foundry

Casting: Ductile iron obtains spherical graphite through spheroidization and inoculation treatment, which effectively improves the mechanical properties of cast iron, especially the plasticity and toughness, thereby obtaining higher strength than carbon steel.

Main properties of castings

Foundry: Ductile iron Castings It has been applied in almost all major industrial sectors, which require high strength, plasticity, toughness, wear resistance, resistance to severe thermal and mechanical shock, resistance to high or low temperature, corrosion resistance and dimensional stability. In order to meet these changes in service conditions, ductile iron has many grades, providing a wide range of mechanical and physical properties.

Most ductile iron castings, as specified in International Organization for Standardization ISO1083, are mainly produced in non-alloyed state. Obviously, this range includes high-strength grades with tensile strength greater than 800 N/mm2 and elongation of 2%. Another is a high-plasticity grade with an elongation greater than 17% and a corresponding lower strength (as low as 370 N/mm2).

Strength and elongation are not the basis for designers to choose materials, and other critical important properties include yield strength, elastic modulus, wear resistance and fatigue strength, hardness and impact properties. In addition, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance as well as electromagnetic properties may be critical for designers. To meet these special uses, a group of austenitic ductile iron, commonly called Ni-Resis ductile iron, has been developed. These austenitic ductile irons are mainly alloyed with nickel, chromium and manganese and are included in international standards.

Foundry : It is pearlitic ductile iron. The castings have the characteristics of medium and high strength, medium toughness and plasticity, high comprehensive performance, good wear resistance and vibration damping, and good casting process performance. Its performance can be changed through various heat treatments. It is mainly used for various power machinery crankshafts, camshafts, connecting shafts, connecting rods, gears, clutch plates, hydraulic cylinder blocks and other parts.
